One Month Down

It’s hard to believe that I’m halfway through my contract here in NYC. Time is going fast as I continue to work 4 12 hour shifts per week and try to get out of the house and clear my mind on my days off. Despite the fact that things seem to be slowing down here, there have been many different challenges along the way.

View of the Manhattan Skyline from work. Still so surreal!

Some of the challenges I’ve experienced so far would be caring for non English speaking patients, adjusting to city life, acclimating to the culture of New Yorkers and the hospital, and of course, caring for very sick people with Covid.

Without a doubt, this hospital has been the most diverse that I’ve worked at. From the culture of the hospital to all the different and unique ethnicities of patients and staff, it has been a learning experience. After about 3 weeks of work, I finally had my first English speaking patient. Luckily we have these fancy iPhones that we carry around to scan meds and have access to the patient’s chart, but also there is a interpreter app that allows me to get a translator within seconds. Thank goodness for technology!

Over the past 4 weeks, I’ve also quickly discovered that living in big city comes with encountering harsher personalities. It’s been a great lesson in acknowledging different behaviors, learning how to react with thicker skin and not taking things personally.

Just breathe! (Has a whole new meaning now)

Half of my time at work so far has been spent working in the Covid ICUs. I am learning a lot there and taking it all in. It’s been a nice change of pace to just be a helper to other nurses as well as learn more about critical care.

Although I’ve been around a lot of covid positive patients, I’ve managed to stay healthy (so far). I feel adequately protected with the PPE that’s been provided. Sometimes I notice myself not being as worried about catching the virus as I should be, but I continue to adhere to the prevention measures.

In case you were wondering how Intensive Care Unit got it’s name.

The outpouring of support from the community has been extremely heartwarming during these unprecedented times. From letters, cards and drawings on display, to the Red rum biker gang showing support and the 1900 nightly ritual of the community cheering on healthcare workers. Doesn’t matter who you are, the color of your skin or where you come from, everyone coming together to show support to healthcare workers has been very unique and touching.

❤️
Even some nightly Jazz music from the neighbors.. nice change of tunes from pots and pans!
Yes, that is murder spelled backwards.
Red rum showing their gratitude to hospital staff.
Times Square covered in Thank You’s.

Aside from work, here are some random pictures of what I’ve been up to on my days off. Everything’s been closed still but it’s been nice to get some fresh air on my days off. (Still wearing a mask when within 6ft of people).

Central Park, one of my favorite places for obvious reasons.
My housemate Claire and I have discovered how much fun these mopeds are! They have been made free for healthcare workers, so we take them everywhere!
Also discovered what taking an Uber is like during a pandemic.
Mesmerized by the giant skyscrapers.

Even though I’ve only been in NYC for a month, I have learned so much. The challenges that I incur are only making me a stronger nurse and person. Being able to explore the city and see the sun on my days off is refreshing and helps my mental health. 4 weeks down, 4 weeks to go! I encourage you to find light in whatever challenges you may be facing and know that you will grow from them. Thanks for continuing to follow along! I hope that you are staying safe, healthy and tough during these weird times.
